He looked at me.

Then he said, “Do you forgive me?”

I had known the question would come eventually.

I took my time.

“Yes,” I said.

His breath caught.

“I won’t.”

“Forgiveness that erases the lesson is just permission with better lighting.”

He stared at me.

Then laughed softly.

“That sounds like Mom and you at the same time.”

“Best compliment I’ve had all week.”

He reached across the bar and put his hand over mine.

Not like a child.

Not like a man apologizing again.

Like a son making contact with the foundation.

“I’m glad you came through the door,” he said.

I thought about that.

The valet. The document. The warmth. The silence. Derek’s face. Vanessa’s pale anger. Christopher’s quiet exit. The key on the table. The empty room. The menu read under bar light. The Ranger carrying him home.

“I’m glad you opened it,” I said.

He nodded.

I finally understood the name.

Not because the restaurant was fancy.
