“You eating?” Diane asked the moment Whitney walked in.
“Hello to you too.”
“Don’t hello me. You look thin.”
“I always look thin to you.”
“That’s because you always need feeding.”
Amelia ran to the kitchen, already asking for biscuits.
Whitney sat at the table while Diane warmed leftovers without asking.
On the wall hung a photograph of Loretta in a church hat, smiling like she knew a secret and might or might not tell you depending on how you behaved.
Whitney looked at it for a long time.
“Do you think Grandma would be proud?”
Diane stopped stirring.

“She would.”

Whitney’s throat tightened.
“I know.”
“You paid too. Don’t pretend you didn’t.”
“I’m not.”
“You lost a job. You almost lost insurance. You got called names by people who don’t know enough to be ashamed of themselves. You had strangers online saying you deserved it.”
Diane sat across from her.
“But Amelia watched you stand.”
Whitney looked toward the living room, where Amelia was showing her grandmother’s cat a drawing.
“That matters,” Diane said. “Maybe more than all the rest.”
Later that night, after Amelia fell asleep in the car on the way home, Whitney carried her inside and laid her gently in bed. The nebulizer sat on the nightstand, clean and ready. Medication lined the basket. Insurance card safe in the folder.

Whitney nodded.
That was the work in one sentence.

Near the end of the open house, an older woman entered quietly.

The room noticed before Whitney turned.
Caroline Ashford stood near the door holding an envelope.

“I can’t undo what I said. Or what I did. Or what I allowed people to do for me. I also know that any public apology from me would likely be treated as strategy, and perhaps rightly.” She swallowed. “So I am trying to do useful things without asking them to make me look useful.”
Whitney studied her.
“Are you different?”
Caroline looked down.
“I am less certain. That may be all I can honestly claim.”
For some reason, that answer meant more than a polished apology would have.
Whitney took the envelope.
“I’ll deposit it.”
Caroline nodded.
“Thank you.”
“This doesn’t make us even.”
“No,” Caroline said. “It doesn’t.”
“And it doesn’t buy access.”
“I know.”
Caroline turned to leave, then paused.
“Your daughter has your eyes.”
Whitney’s body tightened.
Caroline seemed to realize the mistake instantly.
“I’m sorry. That was too familiar.”
Whitney said nothing.
Caroline left.
The room exhaled after the door closed.
Tanya walked over.
“How much?”
Whitney opened the envelope.
A cashier’s check.

Tanya whispered, “Jesus.”
Raymond looked at the ceiling.

Whitney folded the envelope closed.
Amelia came up beside her.
“Who was that lady?”
Whitney looked at the door.
“Someone learning late.”
Amelia considered that.
“Late is better than never.”
Whitney looked at her daughter.
“Yes,” she said carefully. “But never would have hurt fewer people.”
Amelia nodded like this made sense.
Maybe it did.
That night, Whitney placed Caroline’s check into the fund ledger.
