“I kept the original safe,” he said.
“I know.”
“Do you ever regret feeding me?”
“What a stupid question.”
He smiled, but his eyes were wet.
“I mean it.”
“So do I.”
He nodded.
I walked him to the door. In the hallway, he turned and looked as if he wanted to say something too large for the hour.
“Marquinhos,” I said.
He closed his eyes briefly at the name.
“You can come for lunch next Sunday,” I said. “But bring dessert this time. Luísa is losing confidence in you.”
He laughed, wiping one eye with the back of his hand.
“I will.”
“And no expensive flowers. They die and make me feel responsible.”
“No flowers.”
“Good.”
He leaned down and kissed my cheek.

After he left, I stood for a while by the door.
The apartment was quiet, but not empty.
